Are you at all into Photo to 3d ?
Some years ago (back to 2010) I played a little with insight3d (an open source from SourceForge with a git repository available) and in the last year I installed the Autodesk 123D Catch in my smartphone, but the experience was not so good - probably because of its camera quality (2Mpx) - but it was fun.

Yes ... I tried 123D Catch.

Give VisualSFM a few tries. The operation of it is very very simple. Press three buttons and it's done.

1) Compute missing match images
2) Resonstruction
3) Dense Reconstruction

The words above are not exactly right ... but if you hover over buttons ... you will find them.

VisualSFM seems the open source standard.

But non of it is any good if you don't learn how to take the photos. The biggest thing to learn is how to take more photos. And then more photos. The other thing is how to let the system do a good job at cropping out background. That part feels hard to grasp. The easiest way would be to have all the background "blurry" and only key parts of the object in sharp focus. Probably most of the object should be in sharp focus and all of the background blurry ... but I'm not a photography major ... so I don't know how to best achieve that.
