Use joystick to move camera? - Tailkinker - 06-20-2013

Can't help but think that this would be a good idea. I have several Logitech gamepads (or reasonable hand-drawn facsimiles), that have six axes and 10+ buttons. Is there some way to map, say, axes 0 and 1 to rotate the camera, and axis 2 to zoom in/out? Is there some way to map joysticks at all? Or to map joystick buttons? This would drastically speed up my workflow.

I know that there are some emulators/drivers/..., so I did a search for you: I don't use any, so try them by yourself. Wink

Okay. Is there any hot keys that allow me to rotate the camera? Because without that, my idea won't work.

Wings3d supports different kind of camera modes.
The default Wings3d's camera mode requires that you hit the MMB to enable you to move/rotate command. So, maybe if you use an other mode you would be able to do what you are looking for. Take a look at the diagrams in this post (by tkbd).

I'm not a specialist here, so maybe someone else would show you another way latter. Smile

Unfortunately, not a single option seems to be given to move the camera based on keystrokes. This is a rather significant lapse. I can only imagine that the devs have been working on more important issues - after all, not too many people lack a pointing device!

From the old Yuku forum:

In Wacom properties, create a profile specifically for Wings3D.exe.
You may have to include erl.exe as well... I have the same profile for both.

In the profile(s), change the pen mode from "Pen" to "Mouse".

I use Blender camera mode and for my wings profile I have the pen rocker switch set to R-click and M-click, as opposed to the default of R-click & double-click.

In Wings prefs, camera tab, set rotation speed really low (like "1")... this alleviates the only problem I have, which is when I hit m-click to rotate the view (Blender camera mode) the view rotates madly... setting rotate speed in prefs to "1" takes care of that.

I'm not sure if this works for camera modes other than Blender mode, so YMMV.

Not a solution to joystick camera control, but it may make viewport manipulation with the Wacom tolerable. Wink
