How to snap objects to plan corners - mhulse - 08-22-2015

Hello,

I have a plane with four corners and four cylinders.

I'd like to snap/align each cylinder to the corners of the plane, like legs on a table.

I've found the "Absolute Commands" >> "Snap" option, but I have not had any luck using it to snap the "legs" to the corners of the plane.

Anyone have any tips that would help me somewhat precisely move each leg to the same relative position on each of the four corners of the plane?

In other 3d programs, I might use snap to grid, or do precise calculations using a move dialog that bases the move coords on the world space.

Anyway, tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks much!

mhulse,

There may be a tutorial on using Snap... Wings3D Channel YouTube

I have not used it enough to tell how you would snap to the corner. Once you have snapped to the corner you could use Absolute Move to move a specific distance in from the corner.

Another way you could do it is to create a "Grid" for the top of the table. Then use Put On to place each leg on equally positioned grid boxes. If you have a round table top, you could Put On the leg in the center of the table, copy the leg, Absolute move the duplicate leg to the proper location.

Edit: Absolute Move has an option to set "Duplicates" so you could avoid the copy leg step.

Thank you for the tips oort! I really appreciate it!

I also just realized that I should try to create legs from the table top itself. Rather than combining separate objects, I could somehow extrude the legs from the corners.

Just need to figure out best way to do that.

Wings3D is so cool though! It's inspired me to get back into basic 3d modeling again. Smile

Thanks again for your help!!!!

Cheers,
Micky

P.S. Do you know if there is a mailing list (listserv) for wings?

mhulse,
Glad that helped. And welcome to the forum. There is no mailing list for Wings3D. When you post in the forum you can choose to receive e-mail notification when someone responds. In case you did not notice that...

You can stay connected with the Wings3D community in many ways.

I would leave the legs separate from the table, since in the real world they would be separate. That is just my way of doing it, not necessarily the best way... Smile
