Text help please. - GRUMP - 11-08-2021

While making a 3D model I came across an issue adding text.
I have no problem with creating the text or sizing and extruding it, in fact I was quiet happy with the result in the way it attached to the model like this
   

However what I wanted to do was to negate / invert it.
I could not find a way to do it in Wings 3D, could someone shed some light on how to do this? I ended up using other means to get my result.

You do that by using Boolean operations. It is available in Body selection mode.

To create the negative one, you select the first object (the panel) and choose the option "Boolean *test*"->"Difference" and then pick the second one (the wings).

To avoid to get problems (error) I recommend you to slice the panel a couple of time. It doesn't needs to be much. You can use try and error (just redoing the boolean operation) to get the idea about the good amount of slices. If you don't care about the poly count, then you can do a lot and be happy. Smile

Also, the faces cannot be coplanar. So, for your requirement you need the wings to be "higher" than the panel in order it be cut.

How very strange! It worked perfectly on the first attempt but every other try failed with a crash dump.
   
And here is the dump should it mean something to you?
   
Hmm, change text and it will work only once before giving warning

Yeah, the dump file can help us to find things we didn't guess it would happen.
Since some situation may happen only for the model you built, we appreciate if we can have access to the problematic ones (it can be sent to that wings3d email - if it cannot be public Smile)

I would like to suggest you to show the mesh in these situations too. The dialog would be moved a little, but in the small portion I can noticed that maybe both objects have some edges that are overlapping each other (just a guess).
Maybe after the first try you changed something ?!

Did you tried to increase the subdivision for the panel object and see what happen?

The panel is a simple basic cube with only sizing. I think the issue maybe my graphics card, I'll try on a more modern pc. I am currently working in my shed on an old laptop and rebooting between attempts to refresh the system.
The major thing I have noticed is that when the warning appears the cube will not detach (if that's the right word) it remains a pink colour and the undo has no effect.

I don't think so. Not by considering the content of the dump file.
Boolean command isn't perfect and it has some issues yet (that is why you see that *Test in the menu option).

If you can send me a piece of this project I can try to - at least - avoid the crash dump and try to give the users a better message.

How odd is this? I am still using the same laptop and now cannot replicate the error. Each attempt is coming out perfectly.
I wonder if it was the font I was using "Arial" I have now changed to "Copper plate" and can't break it.
I have even discovered that by extruding the back faces of the text I can make it deeper in the panel, exactly what i wanted to do, now all I need to do is remember why I wanted to do it.
   

I was going to add the last crash dump which had a lot more information but I have reached my quota of 300kb.

Thanks for being patient with me I will move back to that video tutorial I was trying to follow when I finish playing with this and give you some more stress.

Ah sorry I can't do that, I work on a live system and have no save option only to cloud and didn't think to save anything as it was only an experiment.
Aha, gone back to Arial font to try and break it and now it's stuck in loop so I can't save that either but at least I know if want success to choose my font carefully.

Yeah, the store space here offered is too short. It's more intended to share dump files which uses to be small.
As you shared images, you reach it faster.

You can achieve that just by moving those faces/vertex too. Wink

If you get the issue using the Arial font, please share more details about it (like size and style you used) and about so I can try to repeat here.
Is the panel just a plain cube? four faces or did you subdivided it?

Here is it using Arial Bold and a simple box:

So, that is something "special" in your model that causes that crash.
