Wings3D - 25 years! - micheus - 10-19-2026

Hello Wingers

As someone who has been connected to the community since Apr 07, 2009 and started coding late in 2010 (after spending one year getting familiar with Wings3D itself and its code), I thought I should leave here my tribute to this tool that brings me joy and that today is celebrating 25 years since its first public release (v0.80).

Wings 3D — more than a modeller

Since 2001, Wings 3D has shown that good ideas, a well‑designed tool, and a passionate community can endure for decades.

Born from Björn Gustavsson’s inspiration from Nendo and developed with the collaboration of people like Jakob Cederlund and Dan Gudmundsson, Wings built its own identity: a focused, intuitive modeller, faithful to the idea that the tool should serve creativity without getting in the artist’s way.

Its history is also the history of a community that never limited itself to just using the program. Users suggested ideas, found bugs, created plugins, wrote tutorials, and became contributors. Some even learned to program in order to help build what they believed in.

Over the years, there were doubts about its future, periods of profound change, and debates about the direction of the project. Even so, Wings kept evolving, preserving its essence while renewing itself from within.

My tribute goes to all who imagined, built, maintained, and used Wings 3D. To those who contributed thousands of lines of code, and also to those who helped with a suggestion, a test, a translation, or a word of encouragement.

Because the history of Wings 3D is not just the history of a software. It is the story of a shared idea that, more than two decades later, is still alive.

And, for those like me that didn't know that version here is how it looked like:
