I am looking for an open source software that can store a CAD image and then have the ability to receive the output from a hand held laser scanner, which has scanned the manufactured component represented by the CAD drawing. I would then like to have the as built part compared to the as drawn image in a manner that would identify discrepancies. I am not looking for high resolution nor precise dimensions. Simply does a hole, stud, or nut appear in the scanned part where the CAD image shows such. Speed is much more critical than resolution. Is this software capable of such or could it be modified to perform the described task?

Hi!

You should try meshlab:

Nice program for importing and exporting to a different format. Very good for decimating mesh. Takes good care of the original shape when simplifying a mesh. See here admission essay writing service suggestions.
