I am attempting to import a LEGO model into Wings 3D so I may manually optimize it. It contains 83 individual objects (each object contains several bricks), and is a little over 51,000 polygons. The file size is 2.5 MB as a .3ds file and 3.6 MB as a .obj file. Both times when I try to import the model as either type, the importer takes a few seconds, appears to complete successfully with a statement of "import: complete" in the information line, and the program then promptly crashes without the model appearing in Wings 3D. There is no crash dump, just a window that says "werl.exe has stopped working".
I've used Wings 3D several times with other projects, mostly related to LEGO. There have been multiple occasions where the exact same problem has occurred with importing my LEGO files into Wings 3D. Simply waiting and trying again later seemed to solve this problem previously, though the chances of success decreased as the model increased in size and complexity. This is the most complex model I have worked with so far, and the model size will only increase in my later projects. I have had this problem on both my desktop and laptop with very different specs, both running Windows 7, and both running Wings 3D 1.4.1.
