YafaRay Plug-in - reviewing for Yafaray 3.0

I guess we will need to wait for a new release of YafaRay before we can get the full effect.

Yes, indeed. I'm busy now with a problem in the Core light integration coming from the background IBL light (looks like a long standing issue).

I'm starting to suspect the problem is in the IBL light sampling and not in the Integration process itself (thank godness!). As soon as I find out the reason and when I can fix it without breaking anything else I will release v3.0.1-beta.

I've released YafaRay v3.0.1-beta

Some of the changes are important as the IBL sampling long standing issue. Also, some of the changes are very relevant for the new YafaRay Wings3D plugin.

With this version it's not needed to use the option "-pbp none". In fact, it will be better if you remove it please, as I'm planning to implement that in the Plugin to select whether the new params badge should be disabled, at the top or at the bottom. If you leave the option "-pbp none" the badge will never appear.

Changes from v3.0.0-beta to v3.0.1-beta:

* Important: Background IBL light sampling fix. This solves a long standing problem with incorrect background lighting accuracy and fireflies. (http://yafaray.org/node/752, http://yafaray.org/node/727, http://yafaray.org/node/566).

* IBL clamp sampling parameter no longer needed thanks to the fix above, so it has been removed from the exporter.

* Fix for crash when using yafaray-xml without specifying the type of badge to be used.
Note for Wings3D: this means that it's no longer needed to use the option "-pbp none". YafaRay options line for YafaRay v3.0.1 should be empty now.

* yafaray-xml: new "-ccd" "console-colors-disabled". If specified, disables the Console colors ANSI codes, useful for some 3rd party software that cannot handle ANSI codes well.
Note for Wings3D: I've already set -ccd in my YafaRay plugin fork

* Light photon control: changed back control param names from "shoot_" to "with_" as originally for better backwards compatibility with 3rd party exporters
Note for Wings3D: This should solve the problems with grainy caustics

* Render Passes: added "generic" external render passes for other Exporters and plugins other than Blender Exporter
Note for Wings3D: You should be able to render passes with this version and my YafaRay plugin fork

* Render passes: added new debug passes for diagnosing light estimation problems

I have troubled about Yafaray v3 in OSX.
I tried to render a simple object in Yafaray v3(XML) + Wings3D,but the image rendering failed.
(plug-in works,but library is not work)

Using archive file: YafaRay.v3.0.0-beta.build.for.Blender.2.77a.for.MacOSX.10.7.or.higher.64bit.Intel.zip
Unzip a folder from the archive,then I installed the folder to "Applications".

Thanks for the new release and especially for making the caustics backwards compatible for Wings3d. The "Cardioid Caustics" scene looks better than it did in prior releases of YafaRay.

The only remaining problem for Wings3D is the issue where when "Trasnp Refraction" is enabled, glass surfaces do not reflect the background due to the background being blocked or disabled. It also blocks the background with other materials.

I have one question about Dispersion in Glass material. Did you change something in that? I ask because the quality is different in the "Prism Dispersion" scene on my website. The rainbow affect is not as good. Maybe I just need to tweak the settings in the file??

About the refracted background, I found the change here: https://github.com/YafaRay/Core/commit/0451d94

The reason for the change was that, when using refracted background, volumes were still rendering it because it was still used for the raytracing process. The only way I found to solve that problem was to remove the background from the raytracing when transparent refracted background was used.

If needed we can add this to the feature requests, for further study (would not be easy to do). However, I have a question: in what situation(s) you would want a transparent refraction of the background but still keep the background reflection?

About the dispersion, I don't remember having changed that. However there were some reports in the bugtracker in the past about it being "too strong". Probably another developer changed it a long time ago to make it more "physically correct"?

I have never actually needed that feature. It is described in the following YafaRay thread... Refracted Background

The only problem that I am having is that when I open an existing file with Transparent Refraction turned on, I end up with black glass or no background being displayed. There is an image in the YafaRay forum by pafurijaz in the 3.0.0 release thread that shows black glass. I wonder if he has transparent refraction turned on in that scene??? Blach Glass

I will look at when the dispersion changed. It may be as simple as allowing for higher values in the Wings3D GUI... currently only allowed to be 1.0 max.

Perhaps it would be better to hide it from the users and just turn it off? Normally I would expect the users just to select transparent background yes or no.

Probably better to leave there for backwards compatibility. The default setting in the Wings3D plugin is set to on. This should probably be changed to off to avoid this issue for new users. Do people who use that feature not need the background reflected on the glass?
