is there a way to force wings to write out a obj in uncompressed format? I really need to be able to edit the file after it's written out and correct some issues before importing it into daz studio.

Didn't know a compressed format existed.
Every OBJ wings ever wrote for me as ASCII.

I'm using the latest beta version and every .obj file is compressed. What version are you using?
Code speaks for itself ...
Code: # Exported from Wings 3D 1.5.3 It's not compressed. I suggest you make a video of what you are doing.
