There is already a not so complicated way to get this (if I understood the propose).
The user gilboonet has been writing a plugin for JSCAD that allow us to create digital cardboard.
Take a look at his site: https://gilboonet.github.io/ (it's in French, but using the google translator it should to be readable in any language)
Initially, he was using Wings3D in his workflow, but using .obj and another tool to create the needed .jscad file.
So, now, in the current version of Wings3D there is a JSCAD file exporter that simplified the process. You just drop the file into his script page and choose the options.
Take a look on the options he offers in his script. I think it would work better them implement on Wings3D.
