You have a similar background to myself. I first started on CNC in the mid 70s during an apprenticeship at Rockwell International (formally MGD Systems (in the UK)). Since then have used most CAD/CAM packages.
You will find Wings 3D a lot different to CAD, but I will say, wings 3D is very addictive, with a good workflow, once you get to know it.
