Selecting backfaces?

It can seems confuse at first try,
but the exactly Marquee Select method is the following ones:

2. Beginning to draw the marquee with cursor overgeometry:

a. hold Shift and draw a marquee:
select all elements inside marquee, front and back ones

b. hold Shift, begin draw a marquee, release Shift, end marquee drawing:
select all element marquee crosses, included back ones

#2 option b works for me. I use the Maya navigation.
