That primitive is only a way to define a Bounding Box size "by hand".
Before, the only way to define it was you to select one object/element and then use the Tools->Bounding Box->Save Bounding Box to set it.
If you want to fit an object/element to a specific size/dimension this primitive allow your to set the dimensions by hand.
In order to "remove"(hide) it, the proper way is to deselect anything and use the same Save Bounding Box option - it's how it always worked.
*element = any selection group of edge, vertex or faces.
