Long as all polys of the model are UVed, normal mapping works
BTW if trivial to do, calling some kinda refresh after Show Normal Maps gets toggled might be good. It appears to do nothing/not work and people might panic At the moment you have to hide/show the model, or in some way alter it & force it's normals to recalculate before the changes take effect. Apart from that, nice. Cool addition, hope will work with all modes later on, a harsher more rim-lit setup would show it off better than the soft diffused hemi-light shader does at the moment, but all in good time. :} Nice work
