Issue with the Connect Line Tool

Greetings, I'm having great difficulty with the 'connect tool' (hotkey:c)
I need some help, when I try to connect two edges, sometimes nothing happens, sometimes they connect diagonally, or sometimes one of them connects together with a line and some don't.

When I try to select two opposing lines, and create a line through them, sometimes it works via length, but then after those lines are created it will not work via width.

Any reason, workaround or solution to this? Seriously seems like a major issue if there are no faults on my behalf.

I get all kinds of strange situations with this tool and it makes for some large setbacks, considering how I'm still learning how to use Wings3D.

The Devil is in the details. Images are cool to share ... but a model
with preselect ready to prime a command that will fail ... that's worth more.

Willing to look at it ... if you are willing to rig the model with selection and share it.

Connect usually serves me well. I was able to do a set up like the one at right and it worked for me.

Hi Corey, welcome to our community.

Just to clarify, we use to say "Connect command" when using the Connect [C] via context menu since we have a Connect Tool option under the main menu Tools.

That is a strange behavior. Mainly for (1);
I assume that for (2) you are not using the same cube used in (1).

What is the Wings3d version you are using?

for (1), that would only happens if you had one vertices selected in one side and three in the other side, then for every [C] one edge would be created for every of those three vertices;

Can you attach your test file (.wings) in order to test it here?

Yes that is the the test file, the blue link which I used. But I can't really attach it head on, because I have reached my maximum allowance.

Edit: Hey and there seems to be a problem with the website, I get the 'encounter a 404 error' a fair bit, but this is easily fixed with a refresh.

Your object is "corrupted". The down side you were try to connect have some strange connections with many faces overlapped. Check it after I extract it and move the faces:


Here is what you can do for fix it:

You have to select the edge loop as pointed in the 2st image and then try F6 or F7 in order to get the selection as in the 3rd image; Then apply the context menu Loop Cut; The result you see in the 4th image. After you remove the corrupted object now separated, select the top face as in 5th image and Extrude it once to get back that removed area.

Well, what a strange object I created indeed. With your clear tutorial, I have now fixed the object, but the issue still to some extent remains!

If I select all the 'Horizontal' vertices as shown in the attached image, and via the context menu click connect, the lines for some odd reason do nothing! Because I have already connected 'Vertical' vertices. I could manually select each edge, and click connect, then position the line to be approximately close to the points, but that would take ages, for the bottom. I have attached an image showing this too (On the Roof).

When connection edges you must have pair of them - let say this way.
In a situation like that you show in the picture one that is the result. What you should have done was to select the large edge and press [2] to cut it in the middle; then you could select the respective vertices and connect them.

But, I noticed that your mesh still have other problems:

I just selected the top of your car and moved it up and I could noticed your model had more edges overlapped. Also, in the front and back side of the car there is some strange diagonal edges which result we can notice it by using Smooth Preview [shift+tab].

So, as you just started, I suggest you start it from sketch again. I don't know if you were follow any tutorial, but there is one very similar to your that could help: Box modeling a car with all Quad topography

Woah, woah! Go back a step! When we fixed the corrupted object a few posts earlier, this fixed the diagonal lines and that bump you are seeing at the bottom in smooth preview.

I wouldn't mind starting from sketch again, but unfortunately I would make the same mistakes as the tutorial I used and the tutorial you posted (which are the same), have rather vague instruction e.g. "Correct areas of the car" instead of use "Banana Tool" And "Do this with that tool".

" - Regarding what you said here, hitting [2] added a vertices in the middle and allowed me to hit 'c' towards the two corresponding points. This worked perfectly (for the top of the car roof), and I might be able to get away with this. Unfortunately if I had to add two more symmetrical lines left and right of the middle line, I would not be able to pull this off using the same technique!

Edit: If you wish I can upload the updated model from the previous step, which removes the diagonal line. Oh and would you please be able to respond regarding Image 2, of the previous post.

You are making for a good tutorial though, teaching me all kinds of commands!
