In the auto-UV tool, when I select "Project normal" it projects based on the combined normals of all the faces (I think). If I select one of the faces that seems to be ignored. How can I choose a different normal?

Ideally I want to project on the Z access.

The camera projection sort of does this, but it uses perspective, which I don't want.

It looks like Camera projection is your answer. You just need to switch from perspective to orthogonal view.

That's worked beautifully. Thanks for your help.
